Q: What is the difference between rain and showers?

A: Rain is a steady prolonged event from low topped and uniform looking stratus clouds. Showers fall intermittently from cumulus clouds. Showers vary in intensity from minute to minute and from one area or town to another.

Forecast - Wednesday 12/17/08

- FREEZE WARNING continues this morning for the North Bay valleys.  Temperatures could reach the middle to upper 20s through 9 AM.

- FROST ADVISORY continues until 9 AM for the Coast where temperatures are flirting with freezing and frost is forming.

- Chilled sunshine, high temperatures near 10 degrees below average, dominates today’s forecast.  Highs slowly warm into the middle to upper 40s this afternoon.

- Almost as chilly tonight with lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s in the North Bay with lower to middle 30s in the East Bay and upper 30s to lower 40s around the Bay and Coast.  A late push of high clouds will keep temperatures a few degrees warmer than this morning. 

- Clouds increase Thursday spreading light rain through the Bay by 3pm and lasting through noon Friday with snow levels down to 3000 feet.  Thursday’s highs remain in the middle to upper 40s.

FORECAST - Tuesday 12/16/08

- WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY UNTIL 10 AM.  Elevations above 1000 feet will experience snow showers and hail.

- FREEZE WATCH UNTIL 9 AM WEDNESDAY.  North Bay lows tonight will hover in the middle to upper 20s for several hours brining a killing freeze.

- Scattered rain and snow showers continue today with isolated storms containing small hail and temperatures run in the upper 40s.

- Clearing and cold tonight with lows in the middle to upper 20s in the North Bay, upper 20s to lower 30s in the East Bay, lower to middle 30s around the Bay, and upper 30s for San Francisco and the Coast.

- Sunny and cool Wednesday with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s.

FORECAST - Monday 12/15/08

Wet weather continues through 10 PM Tuesday.

Waves of showers with isolated thunderstorms bring more rain and small pea-sized hail to the Bay with another .15 - .30 inches of rain is possible.  Rain in higher elevations and along the Coast will reach .50 - .75 inches.

Daytime temperatures move little and remain in the middle to upper 40s.

Snow levels hover around 2500 feet until 5pm when the setting sun allows cooler air to drop the level to 1500 feet overnight.  The wet heavy snow will accumulate to depths of 4 – 6 inches. 

Low tonight dip into the lower to middle 30s in the North Bay, middle 30s in the East Bay with middle to upper 30s around the Bay. San Francisco and Coast will see temperatures in the lower 40s overnight.

With clouds slowly sliding south Tuesday night, temperatures will drop into 20s in our Inland neighborhoods where we could experience a hard freeze Wednesday morning.  Elsewhere, lows dip into the middle to upper 30s around the Bay and near 40 in the North.

Weekend Weather

Dramatic changes arrive this weekend as we instantly jump from fall to winter.

Increasing clouds hold our highs near seasonal levels, upper 50s to lower 60s.

A scattered shower is possible starting after 7 PM this evening and through the overnight hours.  Temperatures drop into the upper 30s to lower 40s Inland to upper 40s and lower 50s around the Bay and Coast.

Scattered showers and blustery conditions dominate the weather Saturday through Tuesday.  Some of the stronger showers will produce small hail.  Accumulating snow levels drop to around 2500 meaning slippery conditions in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Highs struggle to reach the upper 40s to lower 50s with wind chills feeling at least 10 degrees cooler.

Forecast - Thursday, December 11, 2008

High clouds and sunshine today with slightly warmer weather this afternoon.

Afternoon temperatures around the Bay and Coast peak in the lower to middle 60s.

High clouds hold tonight's temperatures in the middle 30s on the North Bay, near 40 in the East Bay, and look for middle to upper 40s around the Bay and Coast.

Increasing high clouds slice 2 - 5 degrees from tomorrow's high temperatures.

A chilly rain arrives Saturday with a wintry mix likely Sunday through Tuesday.

Winter Spare the Air Alert Tonight

A Winter Spare the Air Alert is in effect through noon Thursday

Use of wood-burning devices is prohibited

• The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issed a Winter Spare the Air Alert which bans wood burning both indoors and outdoors until this alert is lifted.  During this Winter Spare the Air Alert, it is illegal for Bay Area residents and businesses to use their fireplaces, woodstoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits, or any other wood-burning devices.

Air quality in the Bay Area is forecast to be unhealthy.  "Cold temperatures and light winds have combined to create a blanket of particulate pollution over the Bay Area today creating unhealthy air quality," said Jeff McKay, deputy air pollution control officer of the Air District.  "Current weather conditions could hold through tomorrow, so it is important for Bay Area residents and businesses to check before they burn each day this week to determine if a Winter Spare the Air Alert is still in place."

Hens Need A Home

140 hens, just days away from slaughter, arrived at the Marin Humane Society this weekend from a Northern California egg production facility. More than 500 hens in total were brought to area humane organizations where they will be placed for adoption as pets and egg layers.

“Every year more than 250 million hens are slaughtered at 2 years of age because their egg production no longer supports the bottom line,” said Suzanne Golt, executive director of the Marin Humane Society. “We’re happy to be able to provide these 140 hens, who have lived in cramped cages their entire short lives, the opportunity to spread their wings and enjoy a dust bath for the first time.”

The Marin Humane Society is hoping to find homes for the hens before the holidays. If you are interested in adopting a hen(s), please call 415.506.6225.
