A Winter Spare the Air Alert is in effect through noon Thursday
Use of wood-burning devices is prohibited
- The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issed a Winter Spare the Air Alert which bans wood burning both indoors and outdoors until this alert is lifted. During this Winter Spare the Air Alert, it is illegal for Bay Area residents and businesses to use their fireplaces, woodstoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits, or any other wood-burning devices.
Air quality in the Bay Area is forecast to be unhealthy. "Cold temperatures and light winds have combined to create a blanket of particulate pollution over the Bay Area today creating unhealthy air quality," said Jeff McKay, deputy air pollution control officer of the Air District. "Current weather conditions could hold through tomorrow, so it is important for Bay Area residents and businesses to check before they burn each day this week to determine if a Winter Spare the Air Alert is still in place."
