Forecast Time Periods

The National Weather Service (NWS) categorizes forecasts by the time period covered.

  • Nowcasting covers 0-12 hours. 
  • A Short-Term Forecast is 12-48 hours. 
  • A separate Medium Range Forecast covers days 3-7, 6-10, and 8-14. 
  • Long Range Forecasts include a Monthly Forecast and a Seasonal or 3 month Forecast.
