Record Rain Possible Friday

The storm system I've been tracking this week is almost here.  It's acquired a lot of pacific moisture during its journey from Hawaii to the Bay.  Record one day rainfall totals are likely for tomorrow (May 1st).  I'm forecasting .25" - .50" in the the Santa Clara Valley with up to an inch around the Bay and amounts approaching 1.5 - 2" in the North Bay and Santa Cruz Mountains.

Weather Modification

Over the past 50 years, various agencies tinkered with weather modification over California.  The weather modification programs mainly involve cloud seeding.  Lately, PG&E oversees nearly all the cloud seeding projects.

Wild Temperature Swing TUE - THU

High pressure over the Great Basin produced down-sloping offshore winds which brought us record warm afternoon temperatures Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.  As the high pressure moved east Wednesday a cooler onshore wind developed.  This sea breeze, developed over 50 degree ocean water, dropped temperatures nearly 20 degrees along the Coast, San Francisco and Oakland.  A cold front pushed the cooler air inland Thursday.

Dramatic High Temperature Drop Wednesday

Good Morning ....

I hope you enjoyed our break from the record heat.  After three days of exceptionally warm offshore winds, our wind reversed course yesterday and started blowing onshore.  The strong sea breeze pushed ocean cooled air into all of our neighborhoods.  The closer you live to the beach, the bigger your drop.

Heat Advisory Today

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a HEAT ADVISORY for the Santa Clara Valley from Noon until 8 PM today.  The NWS says, "It is specific to the areas included in this heat advisory.  It is targeted at the elderly, very young, and the infirmed who might be more sensitive to heat and thus at greater risk".

You may have noticed other areas around the Bay with the same hot temperatures today.  The NWS is using the HEAT HEALTH WARNING SYSTEM in determining who meets the heat advisory criteria.
