Indian Summer....

 
Fall rolls through the Bay Area starting at 8:09 PM today and it will feel like it earlier today.  A strong sea breeze is cooling our afternoons to well below average levels.

 

 
Starting tomorrow afternoon, the cool area of low pressure moves east.  High pressure builds over the Bay Area Friday through Tuesday.  We will experience nearly total sunshine from the Coast to our Inland neighborhoods.  The sunshine and calmer conditions stop the cooling sea breeze and bring warmer than average afternoon temperatures.  We will experience our warmest afternoons when a land breeze develops Sunday and Monday. 

This could be our longest stretch of warmer than average weather this year.

Top Energy-Efficiency Award Winning State Programs

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy(ACEEE) today announced the first-ever awards initiative for exceptional state-led energy efficiency programs. A total of 18 top programs from 14 states are being recognized by ACEEE.

The report highlights programs recently developed with these new sources of funding as well as many well-established programs that have been saving energy costs for consumers for decades.

The five winners come from different regions of the country and represent exemplary models for energy efficiency program implementation. The programs reach broadly across the economy including residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, agricultural, and transportation sectors.  The program winners demonstrate how state governments can implement successful, cost-effective energy efficiency programs aimed at a variety of customer types.

Surprisingly, California only had one program and it was an emerging program.

The top five Award Winning Programs are: 

1. Colorado Governor’s Energy Office:  Colorado ENERGY STAR New Homes Program

2. New York State Energy Research and Development Authority: Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Demonstration Program

3. New York State Energy Research and Development Authority: Wastewater Efficiency Program

5. Maryland Energy Administration: Maryland Statewide Farm Energy Audit Program

Wednesday's Wet & Chilly Weather

 

 

Yesterday's cold front continued the cooling trend that started Tuesday.  Redwood City's 66° high temperature set a record for the coolest high temperature.  The old record is 68° from 1985.  Livermore's 69° was one degree warmer than the record cold high temperature for September 8th, 68° from 1985.  Gilroy was close also with a high of 71°.  The record is 70°, set in 1961.

 

 

The unusually sharp cold front brought measurable moisture with it.  Cities closest to the Coast and our higher elevations received the drizzle.  Other areas finding precipitation in their gauges include Mt. Diablo (0.03"), Las Trampas (0.02"), Mallory Ridge (0.04") and Ben Lomond (0.04").
 

Summer to Fall in 24 Hours

Another dramatic temperature drop occurred this week.

The first temperature you see is the high for monday.  High pressure brought sunshine and a slight land-breeze Monday.  This held the ocean cooled air offshore, stopping our free air conditioning.  A warmer than average afternoon greeted the unofficial end to summer.

The second temperature is Tuesday's high.  The high pressure moved east and lost its grip on our air currents.  Fall made a grand entrance as the sea breeze returned and spread the cooler ocean air over all of our neighborhoods. 

The last temperature is my forecasted high for today.  A cold front blasted through the Bay Area and Coast this morning.  It left measurable drizzle in Downtown San Francisco, 0.06".  Behind the cold front we have more clouds and the coolest air this week. 

The numbers in parenthesis are the difference between the high Monday and Tuesday and again for Tuesday and today.  The last temperature is the total temperature change from Monday to Today.

Perfect Pet Oscar - September 3rd

When you meet Oscar S. Friendly, you won't be surprised to hear that the S stands for "so" because Oscar is SO Friendly! 

Oscar is a loveable orange tabby.

Unfortunately, Oscar tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).  Because of his unique blood virus, he would need to be an indoor-only cat.  Oscar could live with other FIV positive cats, but for the health of other cats, he shouldn't go home with FIV negative cats.  Despite his disease, Oscar can live a normal, healthy life, so come and meet him at our Oakland Facility.

We featured Clipper last Friday during the Perfect Pet segment on our Midday Show.

Another Mini-Heat Wave & Poor Air Quality

High pressure returns to the Bay Area today.  The calming influence stops the cooling sea breeze everywhere today and tomorrow. 

 

You will notice the increased warmth today compared to yesterday, especially along the Coast and into Downtown San Francisco.  

Prepare for temperatures well above normal, could be uncomfortable for those without air conditioning. 

 

The calming influence created by the high pressure stagnates our air.  The build-up of pollution, ground based ozone, could reach unhealthy levels today and tomorrow.

Last week's heat wave brought a barrage of base hits and runs scored at the Giants game.  It will be warm again for tonight's game.....

The sea breeze returns to the Coast Friday and spills into the Bay Saturday and our Inland valleys Sunday.  High temperatures drop 15 to 20° by Labor Day.
